1988 – Year of the Bi-Centennial and into the new Millennium

1988 was the Bi-centennial year when 3801 came to Adelaide; 4472 Flying Scotsman came to Australia and the rail scene was changing at a rate not been before. Albeit 23 years ago and knowledge of the rail industry was a mere skeric; the 900 class had disappeared from mainline traffic and the 500’s, 800’s and 930’s were to follow.

It was all a matter of see it, shoot it, record it for posterity, glad we did. There is a mix of gauges and motive power and changes in infrastructure.

There are things like the Overland when it was “a train”; the Indian Pacific when it commenced workings into Adelaide with a couple of NSW coaches and 806 sadly was one of the victims of ‘rationalisation’ with the demise of former SAR motive power; fuel efficiency for one being an issue.
