A  QUICK  TRIP  TO  PORTLAND  VIC.
2nd April 2011

Train reached Hamilton and passed through there at 0800.. My next surprise for the day being the speed the train travelled at, I was expecting a maximum speed of 80 kph for the journey which proved completely incorrect at times struggling to keep up let alone trying to get ahead of it. The condition of the road added to the general frustration with plenty of 80 kph speed slacks for on going road patching works. Heywood was reached at about 0845 a.m. which gave me enough time to seek out a suitable spot for the next shots, I selected the old rail station surprisingly still standing after all these years.. The train passed through here at 0856 a.m. and on to Portland... The train stopped prior to the Portland yard, the small locos being uncoupled and 44209 continuing solo through to the grain terminal.

PORTLAND - S312+ T333+ C501

ELZ Dimmy train T/No 7763 to Portland featuring S312 + T333 + C501.
I may have missed the train underway at Heywood as it was running late, of course after having waited almost 2 hours, I started to head back in the Hamilton direction.... That must have been when I missed it. still managed a few of S312 and T333 off the train and of course enjoyed my time on C501 with the crew.

Trip to Dimboola, & Ararat.
8th November 2011

The day turned out to be quite a good one. Was lucky enough to have captured 8037 doing its usual run around to Dimboola to visit the turntable before heading back to Horsham to join up with GML10. I was too late to see it on the turntable. S307 is supposedly going to have some quality time in Dimboola for a couple of weeks on a crew training mission there...(from a PN employee).. Was lucky enough to see the green stick just out of Stawell going over the rail bridge and went to a place just prior to Great Western I had recce'd on my last trip over, waited 10 minutes before the train (POTA) came into view. Into Ararat - picturavated G539 sitting dead in the yard on the older styled hoppers.. Waited for the BG passenger to leave Ararat heading for Ballarat at 1650 hours, so that was it for the day.

Friday 13th November 2011

The day was filled with promises of trains to come and go and so forth, turned out to be a dud sort of a day really. Then drove to Queenscliff to find 0-6-0T loco 'Pozieres' lighting up slowly adjacent to the station in prep for a test run planned later in the day..

Had a good run over there, the trains have been enjoyable, the people have all been friendly and interested, even a safe worker near Geelong North, saw me arrive and gave me the run down on what was what before it turned up...now that was service.

The two fellas I met in the Geelong North C cabin were a credit to VLine, so friendly and so on... Made the trip real good, the fellas at B.P.R. were equally so, especially the fella I encountered over a couple of days with Pozieres, I should have remembered his name but forgot.. next time I will write it down.

The intention here was to capture the first Hopetoun to Hamilton (Iluka) Mineral Sands train.  The results tell the story, just the same old same old NR's running.

Maroona station and Chookie the secrurity SM.

My hopes lifted at one stage at 1900 when the signal went to amber over red, deciding to wait the extra 20 minutes, I was a little 'pissed off' when PM6 came into view...  Considering the sands train was supposed to have got away from Murtoa at 1700 hours..  I gave up in the failing light at 1945 and headed for home.

22nd/23rd November 2011

This time having travelled up the previous day via Edenhope, Horsham, Murtoa I ended up spending the night in Warracknabeal, this seemed to be the 'logical place' to spend the night and wait for the train to come to me, then follow it to its destination of Hopetoun.
Unfortunately Horsham did not have any rail action, only the CRT shunt loco 7334 sitting opposite Horsham RWS, no Horsham Freight either to be seen, all sticks on red and nothing happening.

Following the failure of the previous weeks trip to capture T386 and S300 on the returning loaded train from Hopetoun.  It was with much anticipation I waited for the Wednesday train of empties in glorious weather conditions to come into view whilst I was some three kilometres south of Warracknabeal, the sun was shining and the temperature was around six degrees..

I heard the sound of the approaching train just before 7 a.m. expecting S300 and T386 to come into view. Wrong, another initial disappointment as T386 was leading 442s2 with twelve hoppers in tow...

I enjoyed the 'chasing' for want of a better description of this train as it headed for Hopetoun at no more than 40 k.p.h. and was able to get ahead of it without any trouble.

The arrival at Hopetoun (410 rail km post) was around 9 a.m. still in glorious sunshine, the trip bringing back memories of 'chasing' AN grain trains probably with two 830 class locos up front to Loxton, Burra and Appamurra in the mid to late 80's.  It was a most enjoyable trip and went without incident for myself, or the car.
