23rd February 2012

Made the trip over to Hamilton (Iluka) for the Mineral Sands train this morning, arriving at Iluka Siding at about 9:10 a.m. No train...  Checked with some employees and advised The Train was there at 0830. Waited around outside, knowing the train has to first go to Chrome Siding to do the run around with the train before departing for Hopetoun..  First pictures were managed in murky lighting conditions at about 09:35 a.m. of the train when about 500 metres before the Iluka Siding showing it cresting one of the grades on the line.

The 32 kilometre drive through Hamilton took me to the next spot where the line crosses the main road at / near the (295K post), thinking I had plenty of time, I was surprised to see the train come into view in less than a minute...

The final picture for the day of the train show it at / near the Bundoran Lane crossing (280K post), this is about 6 kilometres Glen Thompson side of Dunkeld, the train was making very good time, was a 'pity' there were no speed restrictions. The original intention was to follow this train to Maroona, however as the Navman was back in Mt Gambier, so gave that idea away.

5th April 2012

The day started with the passing of the Sand Train through Hamilton with locos S312 and T386 up front, these were followed this trip as far as Ararat, pictures were taken at Willaura, then of it running through Maroona RWS, the last ones were taken as it rolled through Ararat Station and the remains of the yard.

Using the Navman device I departed Ararat checking out the scenery and potential new locations to get the shots... travelling on the back roads I visited exotic locations as TATYOON, MINIERA, I ended up on Casanova Road, WESTMERE where the next shot was taken of train no. BA6 through WESTMERE with the Southern Spirit painted NR85 leading NR66.

The next little place being PURA PURA, I had to check out the little old wooden building on what remains of the platform to be welcomed by a swarm of bees and only two bee stings from this chance meeting wasn’t too bad considering…....

I came across the Emu Creek rail bridge on the way to Vite Vite. Waited here for what seemed an eternity before the next train came into the viewfinder, this was a late running AM3 with locos NR99, AN11, NR93, up front. (the smoke in the background is from local burning off).. By this stage the light was already going off the bridge, this was to have been the location where I was hoping to grab the shots of the new locos.. I followed this train through to nearby Vite Vite where the next pictures were taken with Mt Elephant in the background.
I was surprised to see it stop on the main line. Not long after this through binoculars I saw the new GWA locos came into view on the adjacent track where they stopped at the ARARAT end of the loop.

I returned the short distance to a pre-selected location near PURA PURA and waited for the five new locomotives of GWA locos GWU002, GWU001, GWU003, GWA006 & GWA007, these were to be my last pictures for the day in the failing light. To get back to Westmere via the tarred road was around 35 kilometres whereas the train would go across on the diagonal and travel a much shorter distance. (I know, I tried this and missed the train by a good ten minutes, so a farmer told me). Was pity as when I arrived, I had a magpie sitting on the KM post, of course as the train came closer the bird flew away.

24th October 2012

A few results from this weeks trip to Murtoa.

Had a quick look around Horsham WCL's old freight terminal opposite the station, the yard is all but cleared. The old goods shed still stands and the 73 class shunt loco named 'Hayleys Comet' sits forlornly at the west end of the yard.
A visit to the WCL new Freight Terminal at Dooen revealed the next train arrival there would not take place until Friday morning. The only trains seen were The Overland with NR66 up front at Murtoa. A string of the older grain hoppers in Murtoa yard were later joined by locos 8173 and XR555.
The Hopetoun to Hamilton Mineral Sands with S302 and T386, followed by a crew change in Murtoa. This train was followed to Glenorchy where L277 was re-attached.

The following morning the only train seen was AM3 with NR44 XRB562 NR16 up front passing through Stawell.

NR81 Overland Anakie Loop. Passing Safe Worker
for the other direction. (human element)

Today was track work in and around the North Geelong C cabin vicinity, so safe working people from SKILLED were to be found at ANAKIE and MOORABOOL. Unfortunately the planned shot with the Chinese CSR locos on the train approaching her position did not come to pass as I changed location. I asked her if it would be ok to include her doing her job in one of the my pics, so managed a shot or two, one with The Overland and NR81 passing. Then ‘both’ the safe workers were in action for an expected track machine which somehow got way laid between Moorabool and Anakie Loop, this is why she is standing there flag at the ready and no TRAIN or TRACK MACHINE came, supposedly it had stopped about 3 km away...

TRIP to BACCHUS MARSH

An early start was made to capture the A.M. Peak Services from Bacchus Marsh.
Arriving at the station the most important thing was to obtain the timetable...
A quick walk along the platform sees trains positioned at various positions in the yard all waiting to cover the peak services out of Bacchus Marsh.
P17 with P11 is shuffling its carriages in the yard on the road closest to the old goods shed..
N455 is waiting with its train on the centre road.
N451 passes and pushes back onto the platform as I walk along with my recently acquired timetable.
A62 with P15 up front with P16 on the end is also waiting further in the yard area.
Slowly the trains move into position and depart ON TIME as the morning progresses, the first train to leave is N451 hauling the 0650 service, the last I watch is the 0743 train hauled by A62, P15 with P16 trailing. Of course there are a few of those VLine railcars passing through the station as well….

1st December 2012

On my return to Moriac came upon a rail crossing on the Geelong to Warrnambool on one of the back roads, with a hill to the left. As I approached the crossing and open country to right, I was unable to see any train on my right and not having a timetable continued on over after deciding perhaps it wouldn’t be such a bad location for a possible picture one day.... Of course as soon as I crossed the rail and drove on I looked in the mirror. Oh no.. the flashing lights on the crossing started working... Stopped the car, grab the camera off the front seat and run back towards the crossing, naturally the sun was on the wrong side of the tracks (as was I).... Oh well.

5th December 2012

Heading cross country today I was at my destination within 30 minutes (Gheringhap) and in time for the arrival of the BG freight. Whilst waiting the sun broke through and I was on the wrong side of the train as it swept around the left hand bend and through Gheringhap. With no cement wagons in the consist this meant that Part Two of the days training out was to be cancelled.  Later saw track workers and their machines at the ready in the siding at The Gap and hoped for a SG train to come before they ‘The Workers’ moved out onto the main line. By this time I had changed positions and was now on the other side of the tracks and again perched on the road embankment. The (SCT) train PM9 came into view within a short time hauled by SCT013 and SCT008.

6th December 2012

Another run to Gheringhap this morning for the returning WCL (Dooen-Horsham) container train with SCT’s loco CSR005 up front. Followed by a cross with The Overland with NR53 on train MA8. The actual cross of the two trains took place some distance from where I was positioned.”

Set off home and upon reaching Warrnambool I did not bother to visit the station on this trip and head directly to the west side of the City to have a look at the El Zorro train sitting in the yard at WestVic. The locos B76 in CFCL/METRO colours and T378 in VR colours were sitting idle in the yard. A few pics were taken in the cramped conditions now that the fencing arrangement has been altered to include the rail line as well. The train was scheduled to depart at about 1930, I did not have the time to sit and wait for this to occur.
