19th December 2012

TRIP  BACK  OVER  THE  BORDER  DURING  SILLY  SEASON.

Geelong, in near perfect weather conditions (we) set off in search of the quarry for the day. A quick check of Gheringhap sees double vanilla NR’s rolling slowly through on an UP train, just missed this train. A short time later the BG freight comes into view and stops about 1.5 km from view..... In the car and off to LOVELY BANKS to the pre-selected location.

Arriving at the chosen location it is noted that the sun is on the wrong side of the tracks although it is actually in behind one of those famous Geelong Clouds (seepicture) making very slow progress across the sky..... duh...

Plan B, sees a lengthy walk in the Lovely Banks area along a dirt track on the high side of the tracks until a suitable location is found for the ‘planned shots’ for the day, the car is now about 1.5 kilometres downhill.

Then changed location to check out North Geelong Yard only get a brief glimpse of an ELZ grain train with a G (SCT) & two flat topped T (VR) pushing back, ahh heading for North Shore no doubt... A quick trip and manage to get ahead of the train as it makes good time up the rise to North Shore as T357 is seen on the pointy end leading.

Returning to the North Geelong C cabin proximity, I see the end of a grain train (PN) heading over the Separation Street crossing and see A79 sitting waiting nearby. Assuming this is to shunt / return the empty PN grain train into the North Geelong Yard, I take my time and watch as it disappears in the distance and then wonder why it didn’t attach to the rear of the grain train....?

Into the North Geelong C cabin to be advised ‘That’s the late running light engine for the Waurn Ponds cement’ In the car and off to Lovely Banks for the second time during the day, this time parking the car at the road crossing at the top of the Anakie Loop closer to Moorabool RWS end and walk the 600 metres back to another chosen location...

24th December 2012

Spent a bit of quality time this morning waiting near the Moorabool Viaduct hoping for a DOWN movement.
After much waiting managed to get an UP movement being a PN grain with XR552 & XR554 (Both FA) at about 11:21 a.m. Had the wind not eased off for about thirty seconds, I would not have heard the grain train whining down the grade towards the viaduct..... THE ONLY THING WRONG BEING THE TRAIN IS GOING THE WRONG WAY OVER DA BRIDGE.......that is from a photography point of view...

TRIP  BACK  OVER  THE  BORDER  DURING  SILLY  SEASON.

Another trip to the east over and at least managed to get a few of the Warrnambool passenger service this time. The BOORCAN location was selected from observations made from my last trip over the border. The COLAC trip came about because of the Otway book purchase..

That’s it, another trip to the east over and at least managed to get a few of the Warrnambool passenger service this time.

BACK  OVER  THE  BORDER  AGAIN

Normally scheduled as a night running train, this week has seen the train running Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during daylight hours due to track working. The usual combination for this train is a T and B class, however supposedly due to a failure of B76 during the week T320 has been rostered on today's (Thursday) train. The B class is sitting at the western end of WestVics Yard at Warrnambool, literally the end of the line these days. (Hopefully not for B76 though.)

12th January 2013

Took a leisurely drive to Separation Street and North Geelong C cabin, the train I was seeking had not turned up, instead perfect timing resulted in getting a few shots of a loaded PN grain hauled by 8153 with 8121. This train was waiting to cross Separation Street and head for the grain loop to unload. Following a crew change the loaded train moved off after a few minutes, this was followed by an empty PN grain hauled by G539, XR553 & XR554, all in FA green pushing back into the North Geelong Yard at the same time as the loaded grain moved off. Within a couple of minutes The Overland headed by NR85 in Southern Spirit colours swept around the bend and came into the picture, due to things not aligning properly the two grain train locos were not in the picture with The Overland being partly obscured. behind the hoppers... I was fortunate enough to have been in the signal cabin yacking to one of the staff, taking the pictures from my temporary vantage point...

Over to Bacchus Marsh waited for the 0908 ish train.... (yawn again) V’locity set x 1. To Gheringhap to see G542 (FA) returning from dropping the cement wagons off, no A on the train today...
That’s it, no trains encountered other than what has been presented here, all very dismal.

17th January 2013

Something different today.

The first picture of the day is of The Overland headed by NR77 having just crossed the Moorabool Viaduct, not that you would know that from the picture below. I find out from a source that the engines are heading to Ballarat to rescue a failed PN grain train which has BL32 and XR553 and is presently sitting in the yard. Prior to setting off in pursuit of the locos, I make a quick visit to Gheringhap on the way through and see a green stick for an UP train, waiting about five minutes CSR002 comes into view with the Horsham (Doeen Freight) in tow.

Travelling to Ballarat via Lal Lal and Navigator, I see no sign of the light engines P22, H1 and P20 on the journey. Arriving at Ballarat East I find the locos sitting at a red signal and the failed train in the nearby yard area. I stop on the old platform opposite the Ballarat East Workshops. A Ballarat bound (DN) V/Line V’locity set passes by within ten minutes.  Following this the locos cross over into the yard and are attached to the front of the grain train with BL32 and XR553. I change positions and stand near the rail crossing and old signal box. Within a short time the consist is underway and heading up Warrenheip Bank.

I took off heading for Navigators and the elusive shot I have been wanting for awhile now at that location.  Arriving at Navagators I find my spot and only have to wait about five minutes before the train comes into the view finder, “Bingo gottim”…  Back in the car and off again, I doubt whether I will get another shot of the train, however good luck is on my side today as the train slow quickly not too far from Navigators.  I race ahead and made it to the next location Lal Lal in plenty of time and wait patiently for the train.

The last pictures are taken of the train as it approaches Bannockburn near the location of the old Railway Station, this is the last BG location before the train arrives at Gheringhap. A few pictures managed of the Steel train WP2 headed by NR66 and NR104 as it runs through Gheringhap in what feels like the hottest part of the day 37C. I try and find a little shade in what shadow shows from an old yard lighting pole, and that sums up the day's outing.

24th January 2013

Today's offering features two trains.

The first picture shows the train sailing through the low lying fog about three kilometres from Camperdown, just the headlight in the fog and the tops of the containers. No tripod, so camera was propped on a fence post.... The arrival before sunrise at 0601 of the Warrnambool Goods at Camperdown. Not much available daylight. Camperdown in the yard awaiting the cross with the UP Warrnambool Pass service... Did stop and have a look at Warrnambool RWS area, bad lighting with the sun nearly straight on into the camera. Passing under the road bridge not too far from its destination.
Then off to Portland and a second healthy (not) breakfast option partaken.... To the grain wharf discharge area, to see C501 at the head of the ‘second half’ of its train, a few shots taken over the fence.  Returned to the Portland to see a PN grain train had arrived in the yard, the locos were already off the train and probably being refuelled (couple of XR’s) in PN blue... A couple of pics taken of the various locos around the place at the ‘Servicing Centre’ including
T386, TL154, TL152, S302,  L268, T342, TL155.
Back to the wharf took a few pics of C501 as it pushed its empties back towards the yard where it was then going to make up the train before heading back to refuel the loco. The last pic of C501 with the Mt Gambier road sign, is probably the closest WE will get to seeing a train again in Mt Gambier.

Then returned home back over the border.

3rd February 2013

Today's offering features two trains.

A very early start out of the Mount this morning in the fog, drizzle, with many grey kangaroos sighted along the way over the border. A selection here of what was on offer at Portland.
L277 doing the tipping of the hoppers. Meanwhile C501 is back on shed with ground relay issues.
Only shot of the empty train just out of Portland this afternoon hauled by solo L277, that one was taken at Heywood, where the disused BG line to Mt Gambier branched off. In recent times the masses of prickly predator bushes growing over this old track have been removed to a certain extent thereby exposing more of the old rails leading to the Mount.

After waiting for some hours near Ballarat / Navigators for a PN grain train to come, the chase was abandoned around 12-45pm, when I headed back to Maryborough... bloody trains. Then around 1900 heard a train a coming into Maryborough. Down to the yard / station, saw many locos on the train in lieu of what was to have been 2 x XR's. This train came in with G539, P20, X41, A81, XR551 XR553, three front locos were cut off to run another rake of hoppers back to Geelong.

Time to head off with some omminous
cloud formations on the horizon.

14th April 2013

Now back home over the border after a good run back in ideal driving conditions and very light traffic. Managed a few trains along the way too for my troubles.

GHERINGHAP, BERRYBANK & WESTMERE.

Gheringhap was productive with many shots taken of the big bird in flight, as I was hiding in amongst the ‘sticks’, perhaps it didn’t see me this time and was lucky when it buzzed in real close… I see this bird or its rellies nearly everytime I visit the place in the morning(s)..
The only train I was interested in today was going to be a Dimboola grain heading back to Geelong hauled by the blue VR coloured C501 & the yellow loco L277. Of course, that was about the only one I manage to miss along the way. This is not the first time I have been caught out with trains between Derrinalum & Westmere and after all why should today be any different.
Stopping at Pura Pura (near Vite Vite) next place Derrinalum… I managed some pics of an UP steel train headed by NR101. Believing I would probably get a better shot at WESTMERE I set off. WESTMERE is probably 7k’s by rail and 20ks by road to get back there via Streatham…
Natural consequences of my actions, arriving at Westmere the local cocky is having a burn off and says “If you’re here for that train, you just missed it by a couple of minutes” With contacts on tap I was advised of an UP PN grain expected through at 1600 hours, this arrived 7 minutes early being hauled by XR559 and G520, even if I so say myself, this one was my favourite for the day.
