11th & 12th May 2013

Pics from the past two days of training over in The Land of the Big V.
Ballarat for the Heritage (Mothers Day Weekend) featuring Y112 and K153.
It was a most enjoyable weekend over there in Ballarat, spent one night in a Motel, which was a great way to get to see the locos over the two day running of the event, which was not just trains but a Heritage themed weekend of Mothers Day. Walking into Ballarat was real good, with people in period costume (dressed up), a brass band playing on the balcony of one place was enjoyable. Unfortunately I had trains to play with so didn't really get into much else other than the trains.

A few pics today of the empty cement train from North Geelong to Waurn Ponds hauled by X43 exiting the yard onto the main following the passing of a V'locity set. Was a bit disappointed as X43 rolled downhill as light engine heading for North Geelong. Would have looked ok with wagons on the rear too 'between showers'.

Pics from today of A77 nearing Waurn Ponds with the empties this morning, taken from near enough where the other pics of X43 on a similar working a couple of weeks ago.
Even though I spoke with the safe worker nearby and was made aware of the three detonators on the track. It was quite another experience when they went off, I jumped, you will just see a little smoke in front of A77 in picture below.

3rd August 2013

Before dawn on Saturday the 3rd of August, in grey winter skies and misty rain we leave home, trekking northwards to Wolseley for another training day out adventure. The targets this time are a GWA Wolseley grainy in rail terms, a 1283 and a GWA grain train heading for Dimboola called a 6AK1. It appears from various intelligence gathered from other sources in the rail scene that the Dimboola train has slipped over the border earlier than possibly expected.

Venturing east to the border town of Serviceton the rail signal for eastbound trains shows red which is a good thing for me this morning. Within 10 minutes a train headlight comes into view this is MP7 headed by PN locos NR22, NR34, NR103. A short trip to Bordertown finds me waiting for 1283 at my pre selected location in the yard. About an hour later the train comes into view with CLP17, FQ03, GM43, GM37, and GM45.

Serviceton. NR80, NR31 on AM3.

The chase is on, we managed to get ahead of the train when it is about three kilometres from its destination the sun breaks through and we get the shots before the rain starts falling again as the train arrives at Wolseley.
Further intelligence suggests another train is heading our way from the Adelaide direction, another change of location sees us waiting at Serviceton again. Within ten minutes (AM3) sweeps into view and runs through the station and into the viewfinder with NR80 and NR31.

Time to head east again and on to Kaniva for a recce run for any new locations along the way. With time to spare it is decided to go cross country to Nhill to check for new locations along the way. By the time Miram West is reached the wind has picked up considerably, no suitable location is found there for (PM7) the next train which is expected in the area. Heading further east the rail location of Diapur is checked out, I see all signals are red and decide that (PM7) must have slipped though as we headed cross country. A little further east and a suitable location is found at Easticks Road rail crossing at the 407K:667 mark stopping there, this being about 8 kilometres from Nhill

10K West Nhill NR85 on MA8.

The next train to come into view is The Overland (MA8) headed by loco NR85 at about 2:00 p.m. The wind is blowing hard the rain starts falling heavily, decisions are made to give up on the days training and head home. After travelling about five kilometres west a train headlight now comes into view, it is (PM7) hauled by four NRís travelling slowly. Stopping the car renewed decisions are made to follow this train as it heads east and hopefully we may come across the GWA grain train (KA2) ex Dimboola along the way.

Salisbury Siding. Near Nhill
GWU2, 701, GWU4, KA2.

Just east of Nhill cresting a hill on the highway, at Salisbury Loop as the rear of (PM7) passes by the target train is spotted sitting in the loop there, GWU2, 701 and GWU4. In a short time the line is clear and this train moves off, by now the rain is pelting down and the wind is very strong, opening the car door and opening the umbrella it literally disintegrates, going inside out the top section being instantaneously ripped off over about a half of the surface.

A position is found to stand with backs to the rain and get the shots as the train climbs the grade, the friendly crew on the train made it worth the effort as the short horn blasts and the ringing of the shunting bell sounded as it moved past. So back in the car and managed to get ahead of the train somewhere near Diapur and grabbed a few shots in next to no light and pouring rain, the results were less than average unfortunately. Back onto the Highway and try and get to Serviceton where at least the western sky looks considerably better than what was being experienced along the way in Victoria today.

Arriving at Serviceton the train is seen approaching the station, it then goes out of view behind the silos and obviously stops. It is crew change time which gives the perfect opportunity to get the shots of the train and the crews on the platform as the lighting conditions start to improve.

The next location is selected at the VIC/SA border and once again luck is with the photographers as the sun breaks through just in time as the train comes into the viewfinder(s).
Continuing onto Wolseley perfect timing sees the returning 1283 now 2184 departing for Adelaide with GM45 leading the train, a couple of shots are taken of the train underway in good lighting. It was then time for home and no more trains for a while.

3 day training trip.

DAY - 2

BOORT to find out that the expected train to drop of empties at BOORT then back out to QUANTAMBOOK, had gone through at 2200 (I heard it).  Over to Wycheproof no train, met a VLine feller trying to fix a track machine in the siding near the RWS.  Onto HOPETOUN, oops no sand train loading, also no grain train either.  Enquiries made and advised train about an hour away.
Pictures taken of G531 solo on the Sands Train at HOPETOUN.  Another 'source 57" confirmed that a GWA train was heading for PINNAROO with four locos.

Over to PINNAROO and another 235ks away to find GWA locos 2214, GM47, 703 and GM42 loading there in the Viterra silos. Various pics taken, including a shot through the weighbridge window frames and reflections on water on the reserve.

In failing light after loading problems the train eventually got away on dark, the heavy cloud covering didnít help either with mediochre picture results.

Overnight LAMEROO.  Expecting a leisurely drive home on Wednesday morning.

3 day training trip.

DAY - 3

Surprised to hear train horns in LAMEROO at 0744 am, fortunately the train stopped GM38 (AN green) and GM40 (AN green) and 40 hoppers, quickly got dressed, loaded the car and out of the motel.  It was crew change time. Followed the train to Pinnaroo, first pics at PARILLA, utilising the car as a viewing platform, no dents this time.

Into PINNAROO and waited at the first road level crossing for the train to stop there, no it went straight through and kept going east through town. Raced out of town to Lovers Lane to watch the train continuing towards the Victorian borderÖ  Eventually the train reached the AWB Pinnaroo Grainflow site (I didnít know this operated) this is about one l kilometre west of the SA / VIC border nearly opposite the SA Fruit Fly Inspection point for road traffic. Gained permission to photograph the train from within the grain loading area.
Waited for the train to depart the Grainflow site, followed it though PINNAROO with the last pictures of this train taken at PARILLA.  Then it was homeward bound for me.
