I didn't realise things were so busy just on dark around Geelong.  Of course the B's came out of North Shore a little late, running wrong line until before CORIO station when they came to a stand. Waiting for an UP passenger service to pass..
The first shot below of this particular morning was of locos G522, H1 & XR551 on the Mildura 'Fruitflyer', seen at Little River. Then we see the works train with a B class at each end near Little River, underway to West Weribee before leaving the existing main lines and going up and onto the overpass/flyover onto the trackwork of the Regional Rail Link.

Today's outing for the Qube grain ex Dimboola with C501 & EL55. Managed the coverage of this train from Langi Logan to Inverleigh, luckily it had two crosses where it was 'looped' at Vite Vite & Berrybank enabling me to get well ahead for a few of the shots. Thanks to everyone who made the days activity possible. Yes, I have managed to get some pics of C501 leading a train at long last.

When you speak with someone on the way out on today's training mission about my SD card nearly full, make sure you do something about it before the train comes into view..... Luckily the train was running through a 20K speed restriction as it approached and the dreaded warning flashed (CARD FULL) or similar in the view finder.. Managed the shots along the way at the pre-selected locations, unfortunately a few of the locations bombed out due to the patchy cloud conditions. The last shots were taken passing Inverleigh station where the PN grainy 7790 hauled by G531 & G530 passed the stabled EL55, GL110 & T387 on TNo 9796....

1st May 2014

DAY - ONE

With grain trains scheduled for RAINBOW, MURTOA, SEA LAKE & MURRAYVILLE on my list today as I set off in the early hours of the morning..

Fate has a funny way of intervening or playing its part in just how the day turns out. Once again flexibility comes into play yet again. Without a certain degree of flexibility you are wasting your time dealing with trains.

The turning point came very early in the trip when no more than about 100 kilometres from home I had a very close encounter with a large grey kangaroo, fortunately with heavy braking I only clipped a leg of the 'beast' when I was very close to stopped on the road. Following that incident that slowed my speed even more making my initial destination of RAINBOW out of reach for the planned 0705 eta there.

Option 2 was settled on reaching Horsham for refreshments, before heading off for MURTOA and my first train of the morning.

The short drive out to see locos 8145 and 8110 loading at the Murtoa (Marmalake) found more trouble in the form of the dirt road which had been converted to a claypan, once I had turned onto this road there was literally no going back until I reached the rail crossing about 800 metres off the tar.

Now a longer drive via WARRACKNABEAL and I was on my way to RAINBOW at last.

Reaching RAINBOW the real place, not some mythical place at the end of the rainbow, there was no train to be seen.  Some truck drivers and the grain agent were sitting under the pepper tree in their makeshift outdoor setting.  Today was hardly the day for this type of activity with a cool breeze blowing and heavy cloud. This was when I found out the train had been cancelled at the last minute, was now expected the following Monday.

GOYURA out of Hopetoun with
BL26 and BL30 on Train No 7769.

Off again and now heading for HOPETOUN to catch up with the mineral sands train. Arriving there just in time to see it running around the loaded hoppers. Just enough time for a few pictures before it moves off with me in pursuit. As I am heading north eastwards after this, I chose to follow the train to the first silo out of  HOPETOUN at GOYURA and capture it as it swings around a right hand bend in the track.

Now it is time to head for SEA LAKE where another grain train 'could' be loading, arriving there I find the train with locos G527 and G521 already loaded and idling away on the main line. They were not in a very interesting location. A record shot  was taken in the miserable conditions.. No picture shown, was not good enough.

Leaving SEA LAKE, I now head for OUYEN which is to be my destination for the night. At this time I realise I am too tired to head out to MURRAYVILLE to catch up with the returning grain train, instead I head for the pre booked accommodation and a rest before venturing out again.

Following a catnap and a 'cup of tea', I now head east towards MURRAYVILLE hoping to catch up with the returning 'wheatie'...  Stops are made at various locations along the way seeking suitable photographic opportunities for the train.

In failing light I continue heading eastwards and reach TORRITA, one spot is selected there for future reference on the GPS.. As always, when you wait for a train it just never seems to come, after about 30 minutes a decision is made to head for UNDERBOOL and hopefully intercept the train there. The rail line goes cross country and is out of sight nearing UNDERBOOL, of course when a few kilometres out of the place, I catch a glimpse of movement in amongst the trees, bugger it's the train.

Back to TORRITA in plenty of time to get set up for the shot as it comes down a slope into the yard, it eventually arrives, the light is poor and darkness is not too far off at this time, the heavy cloud cover adding to my troubles.. Solo and drab FA painted G528 trundles into view with 20 loaded hoppers trailing.

Off in pursuit, is hardly the term I would use, this is not a fast train by any stretch of the imagination, but in the failing light, I find another spot to get another picture as it starts climbing a bank into WALPEUP. Back in the car and to the next location which will be the last picture I get of the train in the available lighting as it runs through WALPEUP yard.

Into OUYEN and up onto the footbridge near the station to wait for the trains arrival. Out with the tripod and manage to do a few pics of the station in the available lighting. The train arrives on dark and creeps into the yard. I am hoping the train stops near the station to do a crew change.. No such luck it passes under the footbridge travels another 200 metres before stopping.

The loco is cut off the train and runs around.  I manage to get set up and take the shots off the station platform as the crew change takes place. That is the end of DAY 1 of this trip with another 725 kilometres on the car.

Leaving OUYEN in rainy conditions headed for HOPETOUN via WOOMELANG to see another PN grain train there. Arrived in HOPETOUN in time to see the mineral sands train pushing back into the yard from the loading point.. Within 15-20 minutes the train was underway in inclement weather conditions, nevertheless was an enjoyable run to WARRACKNABEAL following this train at its maximum speed of 40kph, due to the condition of the track.

I left the train at Warracknabeal and headed for home, total kilometres for the two days being 1,241 kms..

Moved 85 kilometres closer to the Hamilton (Iluka Plant) and waited for a solo G520 in FA colours to 'refuel'... then it moved back and hook up to the now emptied sands train hoppers.. 'heading for Portland' for the regular servicing down there in the Portland Yard usually Saturdays... (so I found out).. Well in other words, I had heard this happened, but today it was confirmed. Eventually the train departed onto the main line and headed for Portland stopping near the crest of the first hill to wait for the 'second man' to walk uphill to the train.
