ADELAIDE - GAWLER
Line Major Works Project

PART - 5   Gawler Line Electrification
2012

ELECTRIFYING  THE  TRACK
INSTALLATION

Gawler rail line electrification NOW ON HOLD.
The electrification of the Gawler and Outer Harbour rail lines has been suspended.

The projects, which would have made train travel faster and smoother, were deferred by Treasurer Jack Snelling until
2015/16 as part of 2012 State Budget. The decision will save the State Government $372.9 million.
Mr Snelling said the electrification would be put on hold “while we wait for revenues to return to more normal levels”.
The move comes just two months after the completion of re-sleepering works on the Gawler line.
The line was closed for seven months during the works, causing disruption to commuters and local businesses.
Further work on both lines, which will include installation of poles and wires, will be put on hold until 2015/16.

The electrification of the Noarlunga line from Adelaide to Seaford will continue and will be completed by late 2013.
