25th July 2010

The main reason for this trip north was to capture the 'Old green workhorse GM40' on the SCT Shuttle trip from Adelaide to Pt Augusta.
Upon leaving Adelaide in the early hours when most sensible people are still sound asleep, I decided the trek north would be well worth it to capture the faded green AN painted GM40, I believed it was going to be the trailing loco for this trip with SCT010 leading out.

My first sighting of this train was on crossing the Pt Germein overpass and seeing GM40 come into view leading SCT010 away from a cross in the loop, the two locos were followed by just one crew car. This was to be more of a very light engine movement than a real train. This very short train was captured at various locations along the way to Pt Augusta.

GM40 stopped for a cross with Train No: 6PM7 with NR98 and NR90.  Was a memorable shot for me as
I added another dent to the roof of my car attempting to gain a bit of height advantage for the shot.

In Port Augusta, good timing, great weather and a bit of luck found me in the right place for the departure of the
lengthy Leigh Creek coal empties from the Pt Augusta Power Station at around 9:00 a.m. with 8244 XRB560 and VL544.

Further stops were made on the return trip 'home' of various places of rail history interest (to me)  being Merriton, Blyth, Hoyleton and finally Hambley Bridge in the failing light of day.

I travelled out towards Port Wakefield in the early hours of the morning a near full moon was setting on my left hand side,  the sun did rise on my right side. On the return journey following a lengthy drive whilst travelling along Heaslip Road,  the sun was setting on my right side and the full moon was a rising over them thar Adelaide hills. Great day all round.

Warnertown......1304hrs
Crystal Brook.....1314hrs
Snowtown...................
Nantawarra.......1414hrs
Bowmans........... stopped
You could say it was rolling along rather nicely
although the loading was very light with:
11 vehicles,  for 518tonnes,  length 245metres

These next be rare shots of 4 trains at Bowmans at one time
Being in right place at right time.

Having never ventured to that end (Adelaide) end of Bowmans, I had no idea what to expect, the surprise was complete when arriving there not only was the train with GM38 leading, but also the Balco with GL111 and the ex 45 class No.103 was on the Balco siding and not expected to get away until 0300 the next morning.

GM38 with its train was sitting in the passing siding waiting for the cross ‘luckily’. GM46 and 703 were also awaiting departure with the loaded train from ‘Viterra Grain Handling’ facility just to the rear of GM38’s train.

Bowmans has two other tracks running off of it –
The Balco siding (container loading/unloading)
The now Viterra GHF complex siding and loading area.

DAY  ONE
29th September 2010

A three day training trip was first to capture the 3 car AK train (track recording) arrival in South Australia on Wednesday afternoon of 29th September 2010.
The initial plan saw me pre-booking overnight accommodation at Bordertown and Lameroo for the first time in all my years of chasing trains in South Australia.

The planned first photos of this train at Serviceton never eventuated as the train arrived in Bordertown under cover of darkness on the first night, running late after supposedly having nearly run out of fuel over in Victoria.

DAY TWO
 30th September 2010.

The new day (Thursday 30th September 2010) dawned bright and clear where an early morning visit to the BORDERTOWN revealed the second train, an ARTC ballast train destined for Victoria with QUBE painted locos 44202 and RL310 up front had also arrived and was stabled in the grain road facing east towards the border whilst the AK car train with loco 2210 up front faced west as expected..

Prior to the trains 0700 hours scheduled departure from BORDERTOWN, I made my way the 23 kilometres west to WIRREGA for the first shots of this train underway for the day, this location was pre selected on the previous day. The train passed here around 0720 hours at speed as it made its way to TAILEM BEND.
