The Railfan's dedication

28th September 2011.

Following the phone call to action stations this particular morning. There is nothing quite like an unplanned ‘Training Day’ for the retired worker, rail enthusiast amongst us. The phone call said, “Tonto there's a grain train to Keith and a ballast train 2M21 heading for Bordertown”. In nearly perfect weather for the South East I set off for Keith.
Retrospectively I should have headed straight for Bordertown then worked my way back towards Keith to get the shots of the ballast train headed by (Nelly) NA1874 & S311. Of course it didn’t happen this way arriving at Keith about two hours later I find the grain train is probably loaded and nearing departure time heading back towards Adelaide.
I find a spot in the yard and wait for the passing of the ballast train, after about 20 minutes I find out this train has been through Keith and is now stabled in the loop at Bordertown.

The best I am able to do for the day photography wise of the train is to get a few static shots of the NA & the S sitting silently in the loop. Decisions are made, do I go home without the shots I came out for, or stay the night in Bordertown. Of course I am totally unprepared for a night away from home, nothing packed, no battery chargers for the camera batteries either, one of the batteries is just about flat, the other has not been charged for almost two weeks. I stay the night in the Bordertown Hotel in a ‘not so flash’ room with a single bed.

The next morning and the weather has taken a change for the worse, thick cloud and a few spots of rain as I head off hoping the ballast train is still in Bordertown at 0530 am. An SMS is received from a friend advising that there is a grain train heading for Wolseley this morning with two GWA 22 class and two ALF class locos. Having learned a lesson from the previous day, I decide to head towards Keith seeking the Wolseley bound grain train, thick lineside vegetation obscures the line from view on occasions and once again I am flying blind not knowing if I have missed the train heading east as I head west.

I decide to go as far as Wirrega to wait for the grain train there if I haven’t already missed it along the way. A phone call is made, the grain train should be through my location at about 0900, I also find out that the ballast train is also heading off in the opposite direction out of Bordertown. Back in the car and a quick trip to Bordertown, of course the ballast train has gone by this time as I speed out of town on the Wolseley Road, luckily the train is only 4 kilometres out of town and has commenced the ballasting of the track. The rain has now started, fortunately I have a larger umbrella in the car and am able to get out and get the shots during the ballasting operation along the way.

The ballast train was working between the 299K and 307K post at Wolseley, during this time I was able to travel the short distance back to where the grain train was now stopped waiting to gain admittance to the yard and silo track. The ballast train moved across onto the main line, the grain train entered the yard. The ballast train locos now run around the train which placed S311 on the front for the trip back towards Bordertown to continue the ballasting.

5th February 2012

Saturday 4th the vessel MV Minervagracht docked at 29 Berth, Port Adelaide after lunch to deliver the first 6 out of an initial order of 10 new locomotives to be imported from China. The locomotives, designated CSR (model SDA1), will compliment SCT's current fleet of 15 AC 2 stroke locomotives currently in use on SBR ore trains and SCT intermodal services. The first locomotives were unloaded late Saturday, onto low loaders, then roaded a short distance to the Pt. Adelaide GWA yard facility, where it was again lifted off low loader onto rails. Rest of the SCT Locomotive were unloaded Sunday morning 5th.
