Sunday the 24th of September, 2006 and the legendary Coffee Pot in steam and operating, so a day trip to Quorn was the order of the day.

Leaving home, the first encounter of mainline action was Train No 6SP7 hauled by NR25 and NR103 seen at Crystal Brook.

We push on to Port Augusta and with the majestic Flinders Ranges in the background make a right turn at Stirling North and thus leave the main line action for the more important quest of the day Coffee Pot in steam at Pichi Richi Railway, Quorn, SA.

The remainder of the day was spent at Pichi Richi with the Coffee Pot; officially Steam Motor Coach #1 (recorded as NJAB #1 by the Commonwealth Railways) and from the early 1900s was used on services based out of Quorn SA

A quaint and dinky steam locomotive / steam motor coach was sighted steaming away in the Quorn yard, awaiting passengers to board for their trip to Woolshed Flat.

Following lunch, the Coffee Pot departs and heads off at a diminutive pace for Woolshed Flat amidst the might of and sometimes dwarfed by the enormity of the Flinders Ranges. Woolshed Flat is reached and the Coffee Pot is turned on the Y. Passengers alight until the call is made to board for their return run to Quorn.

End of the day, it was a great sight to have witnessed SMC #1 in action, in steam, in sunlight and in reality enjoyment.

The Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society is an entirely voluntary organisation dedicated to the preservation of Australia's most ambitious operating railway museum. Railway workshops and operations are based at Quorn in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. The steam coach was built at Leeds, England, in 1905, and is the only one of its type left in the world today. It operated between Quorn and Port Augusta and Quorn and Hawker until 1928 when it was retired.
