MOUNT  GAMBIER  STATION  CABIN  2015

First  a  FLASHBACK of the cabin in 1986

Picture of the once Mount Gambier Station Signal cabin.

4th November 2014
Pics by Wayne Morris

Following the recent dismal pictures taken of the burnt out MT GAMBIER Roundhouse.
I suppose it made a change to see something positive taking place at / near the old MG RWS platform / signal cabin yesterday.
The signal cabin is to become the amenities block.  Not a good way to end its days.
The top section will NOT be open to the public, OR even go on display as the project progresses.

Here shows the cabin's wooden steps been long removed.  Here now building concrete steps in the opening next to Station cabin.

UPDATE

Went down the street this morning. Drove around onto Railway Terrace and saw 'people' working on the old cabin on the platform. They are re-instating glass into the window frames of the 'box' (re-enforced) glass. So on with the safety vest, asked one of the fellers there if he could take a few pics for me. These are his results using my pocket camera, which fortunately for me was still in the car.

Now has the cement sheeting in place under roof, replacing the old asbestos sheeting.

The signal frame, though rusty looking now. Only thing left on the frame top is the Victorian Master key box, other bits been removed.

Was great memories here, but not now though.
No trains.

Blue levers are switch locks with circuit release button above the blue levers.
Black levers are switches.  Red levers are for signals. White lever were spares.

(surprised to see that was still there.)

UPDATE

A few pictures taken today showing the ongoing progress with the re development around the Mt Gambier Railway Station, just in time for the twentieth anniversary of the last train to Adelaide..(1995).. I have no idea what date the last train went the other way over the border to Heywood (1995)..? The past few days have seen the old signal cabin, now officially to become the amenities block undergoing a facelift. For the first time in many years the boarded up windows have seen the light of day, the contractors were in towards the end of last week repairing the windows and placing re-enforced glass in the frames.

Views from around the Wehl Street end of old railyard.
